The mission of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Minnesota began in 1883 when Bishops Thomas Grace and John Ireland invited them to come to St. Paul to establish a home for the needy elderly.Within months of their arrival, the Little Sisters were caring for 20 residents and supporting the home by begging for contributions of food and clothing in the neighborhood and surrounding areas, sometimes traveling by horse and wagon for a day or a week at a time. The Little Sisters of the Poor have cared for thousands of Minnesota’s needy elderly in our home in St. Paul. The Home has undergone many changes during the last century; yet our basic philosophy remains the same, that of respect for the dignity of elderly persons, whom we welcome, comfort, love and serve. With the help of our vast network of collaborators, namely the volunteers, staff, residents’ families, Association Jeanne Jugan members, friends and benefactors, the Little Sisters are able to continue our mission of hospitality to the elderly poor in a spirit of humble service.
