The Little Sisters of the Poor came to Kansas City in 1882 when Bishop John Joseph Hogan (1829-1913) asked us to establish a home for the Elderly poor in his diocese.

"I commend to the tender charity of all persons the heroic efforts of the Little Sisters of the Poor who are laboring to establish a refuge in this city for homeless destitute old people without distinction of religion or nationality."

Throughout the last 125 years, we have served the people of Greater Kansas City at three locations beginning with our first Home located at 31st and Gillham Road. In 1923, we moved to 53rd and Highland Avenue where we lived with and cared for the Elderly poor for over 60 years. In 1982, in order to meet the growing needs of our work, the Little Sisters purchased land at 87th and James A. Reed Road where in 1987, our present residence, Jeanne Jugan Center, was opened. This facility named for our Mother Foundress Blessed Jeanne Jugan, houses 70 Residents rooms and 33 independent apartments.

We have recently completed a $5.3 million Capital Campaign and have met the conditions to receive a $1 million challenge grant from the J. E. and L. E. Mabee Foundation. The Mabee Foundation has invested millions of dollars in Greater Kansas City projects over the years including our own building campaign in the mid 1980s. The Little Sisters are very grateful for this extremely generous grant. Thanks to the generosity of so many individuals, foundations, and businesses, we are now able to address major issues relating to general repairs, replacement of mechanical equipment, installation of a new roof, window replacement, and other costly renovations.
