YESTERDAY
In the early 1870s, four Little Sisters of the Poor came to Indianapolis at the invitation of Father Bessones, Vicar General of the Diocese and Pastor of St. John’s Parish downtown. Father Bessones rented two small houses for the Sisters near his church, and the Sisters took in six elderly guests within just a few days.

TODAY
The Little Sisters at St. Augustine’s Home work with over 100 full and part-time staff members and more than 300 volunteers to provide a loving home for 92 needy elderly, offering a continuum of care through independent living apartments, assisted living, or total nursing care.
While most Residents are native Hoosiers, some have come from other states and even other countries. The majority of our Residents at St. Augustine’s Home are in their mid- to late-80s. While many are Roman Catholic, men and women of all faiths are welcomed to St. Augustine’s Home with open arms.
St. Augustine’s Guild
An enthusiastic group of 60 women founded the St. Augustine’s Guild in 1967 to help the Little Sisters with the transition to the new home. When the Guild celebrated its 40th year of service in May 2007, it boasted more than 250 members! Guild members annually provide more 16.000 hours of service at St. Augustine’s Home. Wherever there is a need Guild members are to be found. Bringing their time, energies and talents, the St. Augustine’s Guild is surely making a lasting difference in the lives of our Residents.
A “Little Family”
The Little Sisters operate St. Augustine’s as a true home, rather than an institution. In fact, while 25% of most nursing home beds in the Indianapolis area are empty, according to Indiana’s Family and Social Services Administration, St. Augustine’s Home operates at capacity, and with a waiting list. When one Resident was asked what she liked about living in the home, she exclaimed, “Everything!” She continued, “When you come to live with the Little Sisters, you are not going to an ‘old people’s home.’ You are joining a community… It’s like a little family.”
TOMORROW
We invite you to consider becoming part of the loving family at St Augustine’s Home by helping the Little Sisters of the Poor through your prayers, generous gift of self or contributions. Assure that tomorrow’s needs in caring for the elderly can be met by helping today. God bless you!
