The Little Sisters of the Poor arrived in Mobile on June 13, 1901, at the request of Bishop Edward P. Allen to serve the elderly poor of the area of his diocese- all of Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida! From the beginning, the Home has been non-denominational, and since the percentage of Catholics has always been lower than that of other faiths in this area, the Little Sisters have consistently welcomed and cared for needy elderly without discrimination.

The property for the Home and its original buildings were given by Major P.C. Hannon, who gave generously to nearly every worthwhile cause in the Mobile area. The second home, built in 1914, resulted from the gifts of many, but in particular through the donations of Ms. Sarah and Mary McGill. Sacred Heart Residence, built in the 1970's to meet the changing needs of the elderly and to replace a structure unacceptable to Alabama and Federal authorities, was also realized through the gifts and efforts of countless benefactors. At the time of its centenary, the Home had already served over 4,800 elderly poor persons from over 25 states and 18 countries.

The Little Sisters continue to look forward to the changing needs of the Elderly of the region. At present, they are preparing to launch a new effort to provide forty apartments for low income Elderly persons who will be integrated fully into the life of the Home. Although the Little Sisters meet all the criteria of Medicaid and Medicare requirements, and are noted throughout the region for the quality of care they offer, they remain committed to the heart of their mission, which is to provide a Home for the needy elderly where they realize the love God has for them. The Little Sisters, and their many lay collaborators, strive to love and serve the Residents with a contagious joy that permeates the moments of everyday life, to live as a Family supported and sustained by the Providence of God manifest through the generosity of benefactors who enable them to continue their mission.
