In 1903 the Little Sisters of the Poor began serving the aged in the Delmarva area with the opening of St. Joseph’s Home on 4th Street and Bancroft Parkway in downtown Wilmington. There, assisted by many benefactors and friends, the Little Sisters provided care and comfort for over 4,000 elderly of minimal financial resources.
In 1976, when long-term care regulations and health-care building codes mandated massive renovations, the Little Sisters broke ground for a new home to be located on Salem Church Road in Newark. The Jeanne Jugan Residence was dedicated on April 23, 1978.
Today, enabled by the generosity of those who contribute time, talent and treasure to work with us in Jeanne Jugan Residence, the Little Sisters of the Poor, assisted by full and part-time employees and many volunteers offer quality care in a home-like setting to103 Residents. Because this care is reserved for those in need, the work of the Little Sisters of the Poor has always been supported mainly by donations.
We are now striving to raise the $4.3 million needed to complete Phase 1 of a capital campaign which will enable us to provide needed improvements to our Home in order to better care for our Residents and enhance their quality of life. These betterments will help us comply with the standards for those with disabilities and decrease energy usage by installing more cost effective utility equipment. This includes replacement of over 600 windows. Anything that you can do to help will be greatly appreciated and repaid by grateful prayer.
