St Joseph's Home
Louisville, Kentucky
The Little Sisters of the Poor first came to Louisville, Kentucky in 1869. The old St. Joseph’s Home for the Aged, at 622 S. 10th Street, served the needy elderly until 1977. During this time, the Little Sisters served over 5,000 aged poor in Louisville. Unfortunately, the Home was closed in 1977, due to structural problems. With the support of a group of dedicated community friends, a new home was opened in May of 1991 and the Little Sisters returned to Louisville. They have now been serving the needy elderly in Louisville for a total of 127 years. The Little Sisters who operate St. Joseph’s Home are committed to serving the needs of the elderly poor in the Louisville Metropolitan area and surrounding areas, regardless of race, creed, sex or nationality. Our Home is a loving space, with the environment of a close-knit family. The Little Sisters and staff are committed to giving our Residents happiness, dignity, independence, respect for life, a nurtured spirit and a community that includes the Residents family and friends. The Little Sisters and staff of the St. Joseph’s Home strive to meet the individual, physical, social, spiritual and emotional needs of the residents. Quality care is provided to nearly 80 residents whom are all over 60 years of age and are without the financial means, family or social support to maintain independence in the community. Three levels of care are available in our Home: Apartment Living: is offered to the needy elderly who are still able to live independently. Rent is based on income. Personal Care: is for the ambulatory senior who desires minimal assistance while still being able to perform basic tasks of daily personal care independently. Nursing Care: is for those Residents who need complete nursing care and assistance with their daily needs. We generally do not accept applicants for this level of care since these rooms are needed for Residents who currently reside in the home. Throughout the years, the St. Joseph’s Home has been blessed. The Little Sisters have had many major benefactors, a community of regular supporters, and a large group of dedicated volunteers who have worked diligently in the spirit of humble service to help the Little Sisters continue their mission.
